Breaking the Surface: Romesha Wijesena’s Journey to Becoming Sri Lanka’s Youngest Female Dive Leader
In the vibrant dive community of Unawatuna, Sri Lanka, a new wave of leadership is taking shape.
At the heart of Pearl Divers Dive Center is Romesha Wijesena, a woman whose passion for the ocean is matched only by her ambition to lead.
Her journey is not just a personal success story—it’s an inspiration for women across the region.
The First Leap: Youngest Female PADI Instructor in Sri Lanka
Romesha first made history in 2023 when, at the age of just 21, she became the youngest female Sri Lankan PADI Instructor.
This monumental achievement immediately positioned her as a local hero and a powerful role model, demonstrating that true leadership knows no age limit. As a co-owner of Pearl Divers, she brings this energy and expertise to every course taught and every dive guided.
The Next Horizon: Training to Mentor
Now, Romesha is setting her sights even higher. She is currently undergoing rigorous training with PADI Course Directors Janhavi Deodhar and Mudasir Wajid to achieve the prestigious PADI IDC Staff Instructor rating.
Her goal? To become the youngest female PADI IDC Staff Instructor in Sri Lanka.
This specialized training is about far more than just teaching; it’s about mentorship and evaluation. By training directly under Janhavi—herself a barrier-breaker as one of the youngest female Course Directors in her region—Romesha is perfectly positioned to learn the critical skills needed to mentor the next generation of dive professionals.
This mentorship embodies the empowerment and excellence that defines the Scuba Journals training platform.
Leading Beyond the Water
Romesha's leadership is not confined to the reef. As a co-owner and manager of Pearl Divers Dive Center, she truly embodies the role of a modern dive leader. She balances the practical demands of dive safety and instruction with the critical business management required to run a successful operation in a prime tourist destination.
Her journey is a powerful testament to the fact that leadership in diving is comprehensive—it requires knowledge, confidence, business acumen, and an unwavering commitment to the ocean community.
Romesha Wijesena is a driving force, ensuring that Pearl Divers remains a benchmark for excellence and an engine for empowering women in diving across Sri Lanka and beyond.
Follow her journey as she continues to break barriers and prove that the future of dive leadership is bold, brilliant, and breaking the surface all over the world.
